What better accompaniment to your favorite beer, than a quick and easy Beer Bread, made with only a handful of ingredients, topped with garlic butter?

Beer Bread on a cutting board with butter and garlic

I love a good beer bread with soup, stew, as toast for breakfast, as a snack…

Pretty much any time.

I love this recipe because it’s quick and easy – 1 bowl, no yeast required!

It’s versatile! If I know I want it with soup, I add the garlic butter. If I want it for breakfast, I opt for plain melted butter instead, maybe even a drizzle of maple syrup.

And this Beer Bread his all the right notes – cripsy, crunchy top with a soft and chewy middle. Sweet notes, savory notes….beer notes?

Speaking of, the type of beer you use will impart some flavor…so onto Key Ingredients!

Ingredients for Beer Bread laid out in bowls
I’m not getting any kind of kickback from Shiner – I just really like their Oktoberfest in this bread.

Key Ingredients

  • Beer – I prefer using a lager or an Oktoberfest for this recipe (which also happen to be two of my favorite beers). If you’re not sure what kind of beer to use, or you’re not much of a beer drinker, I’d go with a lager. It will give a more mild flavor to the bread.
  • Salt – I used good ol’ table salt for this recipe. Changing the type or grind of salt can and will change the salinity of the final product, so be careful when swapping ingredients. (For more on that, read here!).
  • Flour – Let’s keep things easy – I call for all-purpose flour here.
  • Sugar – A little sugar brings balance to the bitterness of the beer, and a little tenderness to the texture of the crumb.

The Process

This is a one-bowl recipe – amazing, right?

Melt the first measure of butter and set aside.

Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add the beer. Mix, but don’t overmix. Overmixing will make for a tough loaf.

Pour the batter into a prepared pan, and top with melted butter.

Bake. Let cool for about 10min in the pan before removing and brushing with garlic butter.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowls
  • 9×5-inch loaf pan
  • Parchment Paper
  • Pastry or Silicone Brush (optional)

Ingredients

For the Bread

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoons table salt
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 bottle (12 ounces) beer I prefer lager or Oktoberfest
  • ¼ cup butter, melted

For the Garlic Butter

  • 2 Tablespoons butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder** (see notes)
  • pinch salt (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
Spray a 9×5-inch loaf pan with baking spray and set aside.
Optional: You also line the loaf pan with parchment paper for easy removal of the loaf.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.
  • Slowly pour in the bottle of beer and stir until just combined – do not overmix.
  • Pour the bread batter into the prepared loaf pan. Top with melted butter by pouring it evenly on top of the batter.
  • Bake for 45-55 minutes, until a toothpick or knife inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Remove loaf from the oven.
  • In a small mixing bowl or ramekin, combine 2 Tablespoons melted butter with ½ teaspoon of garlic powder.
Spread garlic butter mixture over the loaf using a pastry brush, or drizzle evenly over the top of the loaf with a spoon.
Sprinkle with a pinch of salt, if desired.
  • Once the loaf has cooled for about 10 minutes, remove the loaf from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack.

Notes

Beer Bread with keep for 3-4 days in an airtight container or zip-top bag at room temperature.
**I’ve noticed the garlic powder I use is pretty potent, and garlic powders will vary some by age and brand. If you need to add a little more, go for it!
